What it is
Patellofemoral pain is a diffuse ache around or behind the kneecap. It is one of the most common knee complaints in active people. Unlike patellar tendinopathy, the pain is usually not sharply localised to one point, and it tends to be aggravated by volume — stairs, squatting, long sessions.
Why basketball players get it
High jumping and squatting volume, plus weak or deconditioned hip and knee musculature, both contribute. Because the pain is volume-sensitive, load management is part of every sensible plan.
What the evidence supports
Strengthening helps: a 2021 meta-analysis found hip strengthening and traditional knee-based strengthening roughly equivalent, with both improving pain and function. In practice, programs usually combine knee and hip strengthening with gradual, monitored load increases.
Typical recovery shape
Most people improve over weeks to months of consistent strengthening and load management. Persistent or worsening pain deserves a professional assessment to rule out structural problems.
